Tired of bringing victims to his phylactery one by one, he designed a magical virus that spreads a terrible black fire that slowly consumes the body and soul of those infected, and returns the energy created directly to the Lich.Think of a person as a candle; the body is the wax, the soul is the wick, and the black flame fuels the undeath of the Lich. The flame inflicts an unbearable pain on its victims that is temporarily relieved when they infect another person. As those with chronic pain know, even just not feeling the pain is euphoria. This is what drives the spread of the virus. It also unnerves the players when in combat with the shade. They can be heard moaning, “burn with me!” and then breaking into fits of laughter and crying once they’ve infected another victim.Their method of attack is to swarm a creature and grapple it, letting the black fire deal necrotic damage every turn until the victim is incapacitated.
Then they breathe the black fire into the mouth of the victim, turning them once they run out of death saving throws.edit: is the original concept art I did for the shade. Reminds me of a plague in my own homebrew world: The Charophage. The Charophage was introduced to the world as a magical/biological weapon by Xoghys the Defiled, a Dracolich that tracked the world's precursor imperialist race back to their homeworld with the intent of dominating it. The weapon was designed to enhance Xoghys' power by siphoning a spiritual energy named Anima from its victims. It functions like a magical parasite that traps the victim's soul in its body and lends a kind of cursed pseudo-immortality keeping its host alive as it siphons their anima. Eventually the victim becomes more and more unstable and animal-like as their vital spiritual essence is stripped of them leaving them hollow and they go mad from excessive age. Though now, the plague acts in self-preservation, its creator was long since banished from the world. Makes me think of that one campaign where the players slaughtered an entire town in the middle of the night to contain a highly contagious, incurable, zombie virus with a 3 day incubation period.
DM made them roleplay the whole thing, right down to one of the players strangling his wife while crying. DM was trying to make what they were doing so horrifying that they would stop so the cure could arrive the next day. Didn't work, players finished the job. Both the players and DM posted about how they never want to do that again.
